| File Gumbo |
[Dec. 17th, 2009|11:45 am] |
I'm working on the next Roughstock book -- File Gumbo. This one features two-time bullriding champ Beau Lafitte and his long-term partner, Sam Bell. Beau's star is shooting again, especially since Jason Scott is out of the picture, professionally, while Sam is in a serious slump. Add to that the day-to-day problems of working the most dangerous sport in the arena, and there's always something for the boys to work on.
Here's a quick snippet - there's a little language, but it should be basically work safe. (FYI, this is a raw copy - no editing yet. All errors are mine. MINE. *g*)

| Merry Christmas, y'all! |
[Dec. 17th, 2009|09:06 am] |
*waves*
How're y'all doing today? I have two wonderful Christmas gifts to give today, a few snippets, a sneak peek at the new Roughstock book and the new (final?) MJ/Sonny novel.
First, though? I have to take the basset hounds to the vet for their shots and possibly I need Starbucks.
I'm a soy latte kind of girl, although I admit to loving a 1/2 syrup gingerbread soy latte when I'm indulging. What about y'all? What caffeinated joy am I missing? ;-) |

So this is it for me.
We'll be doing our drawings first thing in the morning and posting the winners here. If you want to enter, just scroll down for the relevant posts.
Here's a quick holiday journal entry from Noah to end with:
December 16, 2009
Well, here we are, about to celebrate another Christmas together. It's hard to believe that not so very long ago I was spending this holiday alone, and now look at what I've got. A real family. Someone that loves me and appreciates me for who I am, and who I want to be. And not just one, but two amazing, loving, committed men - I never would have imagined... well. It almost doesn't seem possible that I should be so lucky.
Phantom is up to his usual antics, like a four year old craving attention, even if he has to get into trouble to get it. I'd worry, but it's just Phantom being himself - just who he is, what he needs. And I'd be lying if I didn't say it was entertaining.
Sir, Tobias - it took me a long time to decide it was okay to call him by name in this journal, didn't it? Tobias is busy creating his own special brand of sentimentality and tradition, decorating the tree and refusing help, sipping a very small amount of whiskey, sneaking a cigarette on the back porch. Coping mechanisms, things I know he needs to do to remember the people who were important to him, time he needs to himself.
I'm not going to let him do it for long, though, another ten minutes and my cookies will be ready. They're best eaten warm - even better when fed to you by a lover sitting on your lap, I think. Yes, much better that way. And then we can stare at the Christmas tree and plan our food shopping for Christmas dinner.
I'm so much better than good these days. I don't even need to sort things out in these pages anymore, except that I like to remember things, like to write them down so I don't forget or so that when I need to, I can remind myself how much love and support and safety I have in my life that I never expected.
Merry Christmas! |

| Last one from me for tonight |
[Dec. 16th, 2009|09:20 pm] |
I'm in a weird timezone (AST) and it's getting late here on the east coast of Canada. I'm in from the cold (-25C with the wind. That's -13F), and getting ready for my jammies and a cup of tea.
On Christmas morning this year Tor will likely wake before Jake. This is because Jake will be half the night doing 'things'. Tor's never sure exactly what it is that keeps Jake out of bed so late on Christmas Eve. It's not like he's putting together a bike or a dollhouse or anything. But every year, even if they do manage to go to bed at the same time, Jake's up and doing 'stuff' until well after midnight.
(For those who are curious, Jake likes to look at the tree. He also likes to eat Santa's cookies and drink his milk, and he also like to go out to the barn and talk to the horses. Jake's a little odd with his traditions, but he more or less raised himself, so there you go.)
Tor will wake up with every intention of making them a nice breakfast, but he'll roll over and see a great reason for staying in bed just a while longer. Jake will get the first of his gifts before he's even really awake, and when they've cleaned up the mess from that they'll make their way out to the living room and the tree.
Jake will make breakfast, despite Tor's intentions, because Tor is actually ten and will play with whatever gift he's given until someone puts food under his nose.
Happy Holiday!
Chris |

| And I'm off again -- |
[Dec. 16th, 2009|06:49 pm] |
Running out for a little holiday cheer, but I'll be back for one last post later.
For now, someone wanted to know about Christmas this year in Shady Ridge. :-) This year, against all odds, Christmas for Hank and Charlie isn't in Shady Ridge. Charlie finally said enough was enough and it was time to take his man home to meet the family. Uh-huh.
Christmas in New York.
Hank's having litters of kittens. He's wide eyed and agog, trying to mind his manners and not be too country. Charlie is being Charlie, and Charlie's mom is enthralled, entranced and charmed like you wouldn't believe. Hank calls her 'ma'am' AND he does the dishes. Automatically. Without being asked.
Charlie's dad is worried she's going to get ideas and is about to take his son's partner out drinking so he kind a flaw or two. That way he won't have to measure up. :D |

| Sex, Lies & Celluloid giveaway! |
[Dec. 16th, 2009|04:27 pm] |
This is not a contest, it's a random drawing!
Comment here with something holiday related to win SL&C in print! Could be song lyrics, could be how much you hate fruitcake, could be a picture of your menorah... whatever. Doesn't matter to me, I'm sure it will be entertaining. We'll pick one winner at random and we'll post the winner tomorrow morning.
Chris and I will autograph the book for you, or for whomever you like.
Deal?

| Bradford & Nikki's holidays |
[Dec. 16th, 2009|03:15 pm] |
So, someone asked what Bradford and Nikki are up to this Christmas.
Bradford is a live and let live kind of man, but nonetheless, organized religion makes him very uncomfortable. It's probably one of the few things that could actually make him squirm. He hasn't been in a church since his Catholic school days, and doesn't plan on ever doing so again.
If given his druthers, he wouldn't celebrate Christmas at all. He never particularly cared for the traditions or the clutter, never felt the need for a Christmas tree or holiday music. In fact, if it weren’t for the club, Bradford would have preferred to spend Christmas alone in his study, insulated from the rest of the world, smoking a cigar and reading – and not emerge until it was all over.
But the club has always forced him to participate in the holidays to some degree and to exhibit, at least publically, some appreciation for the spirit of the season. And so, over the years, it’s grown on him a bit and in recent years, unless you were Tobias who has always known better, you’d have been hard pressed to find him anything less than festive.
And then along came Nikki.
Nikki’s child-like enthusiasm for Christmas, actually for holidays in general, caught Bradford completely off guard. Nikki starts moving around the club humming or singing Christmas tunes on Black Friday, and doesn’t stop until January. It was grating to Bradford at first and he would complain to Tobias, or just gag Nikki and be done with it, until he realized that it was useless to try to stop his sub from celebrating. The season isn’t at all about gifts or Santa Claus or Christmas trees for Nikki, it’s about connections and kindness and generosity - and joy.
Nikki’s joy is what is finally starting to change things for Bradford, and this year, at Nikki’s suggestion, they plan to spend Christmas night at the club, hosting a black-tie dinner for members and friends who don’t have anywhere else to be. During the day the club is closed, and Nikki has found a copy of Alastair Sim’s Christmas Carol, which he plans to enjoy while kneeling naked beside Bradford’s favorite chair. Bradford added a cock ring, a collar and popcorn to Nikki’s plans and now they’re both quite happy with the plans.
Oh, and at some point Bradford will call Tobias, as has been their tradition forever. :D |

| Cookies! |
[Dec. 16th, 2009|04:13 pm] |
A couple of recipes for you. Cindy asked what Spritzes are and the next cookie requested was the Whipped Shortbread (which happens to be my ultimate favourite cookie of all time. This week.)
Spritz
You'll need: 1 Cup butter or hard margarine, softened 4 oz cream cheese, softened 1 Cup granulated sugar 2 large eggs 1.5 tsp vanilla 1/4 tsp salt 3 cups all purpose flour sugar, sprinkles, coloured sugar or red and green cherries for for decoration
Cream butter, cream cheese and sugar in a large bowl. Beat in eggs one at a time. Add vanilla and salt. Beat.
Add flour, working it into the batter one cup at a time. Fill cookie press and press your choice of design onto ungreased cookie sheet. Decorate. Bake in 400 degree oven for 10 -12 minutes until set and edges are showing a hint of brown. Makes 6 to 7 dozen cookies.
Chocolate Spritz -- exchange 6 TBSP cocoa powder with 6 TBSP flour Orange Spritz -- add 2 tsp orange rind and 1/2 tsp orange flavouring Chocolate Orange spritz -- make chocolate version and add 2 tsp orange flavouring.
Whipped Shortbread (omg so good. Use a stand mixer. Trust me. I've killed hand mixers with this recipe.)
1lb butter. (yes. a pound. 2 cups.) 1 cup icing sugar 1/2 cup cornstarch 1 tsp vanilla 3 cups all purpose flour.
Cream butter, sugar, cornstarch and vanilla together. Work in flour one cup at a time, then beat on med to med-high for several minutes, working in enough air that the batter looks like whipped cream. It should be light and fluffy and hold stiff peaks. Drop by spoonful onto cookie sheets and bake at 350 for ten minutes. 3-4 dozen cookies. If you wish you can add cherries to the top of each before baking.
mmmm cookies. |

| Did you know... extras |
[Dec. 16th, 2009|02:27 pm] |
Did you know that you can find some cool Deviations extras on our websites?
You can find Noah's private journal entries, which were originally written for the first book, Submission, but later cut for flow, here.
And, you can find a copy of Noah and Tobias' first contract, here.
There are some other nifty free fiction offerings under www.jodipayne.net/free as well. Please excuse my horridly out-of-date website, however, it's on my list for an update right after I finish that Deviations proof. ;-) |

| Back! |
[Dec. 16th, 2009|12:40 pm] |
The concert was lovely, of course. There's nothing quite amazing as a stage full of kindergarten children belting out a tune. Take that as you will. ;-) I happen to love that sort of thing. I expect there are a lot of adults who don't really want to endure it, though, unless their darling is involved. Fair enough.
Today's concert was scheduled to start at 10:15. I got there at 9:30 with my knitting. Scored second row seats! The look on my daughter's face was priceless.
ANYWAY. That's the parent babble. But you want character babble, so here we go.
Tobias is decking the halls of the farmhouse as usual, lots of ribbons and glass this year. He's trying to acquire a new ornament or two each year that will be sentimental and special to replace the ones of his mother's that were destroyed. Mostly, though, he's walking around and taking off Phan's touches. Whips with red bows stuck on them and hung on the doorways. A festive chain of handcuffs on the banister. The creche created from sex toys on the dining room table.
Phan's spending the holidays in trouble. ;-) Noah is being a good boy and doing some baking. Jodi can tell you more, I'm sure. LOL
Jake is baking like there's no tomorrow. He's made nine different kinds of cookies so far and a Christmas cake that he won't even be able to eat since it's soaked in rum. The nine kinds of cookies are: Whipped shortbread, gingerbread men, chocolate clusters, rum balls (he had the rum anyway), vanilla dips, spritzes, divinity drops, pecan logs, and coconut bon bons. I'll post the first two recipes requested.
Jane wanted to know how Tor's going to wake Jake up Christmas morning; I'll be back with that later :D
(Winner of Acquired Tastes will be a random commenter to this post) |

| The holidays, Deviations style |
[Dec. 16th, 2009|11:20 am] |
So, Chris isn't around at the moment for me to conspire with, but I think I can start us off on what the boys will likely be up to this Christmas.
Bradford throws a huge New Years' bash every year, and that is a very high profile, very public event for all of them, especially now that all three of them are so tied to the club. Lots of leather, skin, and the club's very special brand of kinky entertainment. Tobias likes to play that night, and show his boys off, and as a new business partner, Bradford has, no doubt, asked Tobias to help host.
So if I had to guess what the boys are up to this Christmas I would say they're going to spend it at home, cooking, playing and enjoying each other's company in a more private way. They're making new memories now, but Christmas has historically been an emotional time for all of them and so it's really a time that they like to step out of the holiday craziness and focus on themselves.
I'll wait for Chris to chime in on what Tobias specifically has planned, but whatever it is, I can tell you that Noah is SO looking forward to it! |

| Advent Calendar Sale |
[Dec. 16th, 2009|10:34 am] |
Did you guys see in this post that Torquere has a bunch of our books on sale today? Read my kinky little Dress to Impress yet? What about the sexy Mr. Fix-it in The Handyman? I'll happily fill you in on anything you want to know about those guys, the men from Founder, or anyone else you might be curious about.
And here's where I admit that yes, there is another Deviations story in the works and has been for some time. It's written and Chris has proofed it. It's my turn to look it over and it's been on my desktop for a while, so the hold up is all me, folks. But I'm going to have it done soon and with any luck we'll have some news about titles and such in a month or so. So, blame me for making you wait. ;-) |

| Happy Holidays! |
[Dec. 16th, 2009|10:05 am] |
Good morning all!
Sorry I'm a little late - kids, day job, you know the drill. Anyway, I'm here today to celebrate the holidays with Chris and hopefully we'll get up to some good mischief for you.
Chris mentioned a giveaway. In addition to Sex, Lies and Celluloid, I also have a copy of Founder to give away before the end of the day.
And maybe... just maybe I'll do some snippets if I have some time this afternoon.
So, let's start the day off with some sharing. What is your favorite romantic holiday tradition? Either for real, or something you've read?
ETA: I should probably start with mine, huh? Here's some overshare for you.
Last night, my partner and I lit the menorah, turned on the Christmas Tree (she is Jewish, I am not), warmed up some cider (mine was spiked) and turned out all the lights. Then we just sat on the couch in our well-loved and somewhat drafty 80 year old home and snuggled until we we'd finished our cider and were too sleepy to chat anymore. Sounds pretty mundane, I guess, but when you've got two wee ones and day jobs running you ragged, an hour of quiet togetherness is about as romantic as it gets. :D
Okay - your turn! |
|
|
| Good morning! |
[Dec. 16th, 2009|09:16 am] |
My partner in crime life (let's not start those rumours again) jotting things down on occasion and I are here today. Jodi's getting her family off to their places for the day and herself to the day job, and I'm about to run off to my children's winter concert for the morning.
Jodi'll be by asap, I'm sure, and I'll be here this afternoon. Torquere is having some lovely sales of titles, too, so stop by there and get yourself something nice for the holidays. :-)
I think that this afternoon I'll share some holiday memories with you, or shopping lists, or who's baking what on behalf of my characters. So as I walk out the door to be dazzled by the elementary school, you can throw some names at me. Want to know that Joey's buying Lee? What Jake's baking? What Tobias is planning? Ask away, and I'll be back in a few hours to fill you in.
I have two books to give away, too. There's a print copy of Sex, Lies and Celluloid up for grabs that both Jodi and I will sign, if you wish, and I have a print copy of my latest novel, Acquired Tastes. Stay tuned for how to win those.
Later! |
